About Brookfield

I spent eleven years in corporate finance in Sydney, the last four of them at a mid-tier advisory firm in the CBD. Long hours, good money, and a growing feeling that I was very far from anything I'd actually made with my hands. By 2019 I was flying to Melbourne on Sunday nights and back on Thursday evenings, and I genuinely could not tell you what the inside of my own kitchen looked like at that point. Something had to give. In March 2020 I handed in my notice, packed a hire van with about 400 kilos of furniture and boxes, and drove north to Toowoomba where I'd grown up. No business plan. Just a decision.

Before the finance years I'd done a commerce degree at UQ, which is basically how I ended up in that world in the first place. But before that, growing up in Toowoomba, my family ran a small import business out of a shed on the edge of town. My father sourced tableware and household goods, mostly from suppliers in Greece and southern Europe. I spent weekends packing orders and listening to him argue politely with freight brokers on the phone. I didn't think much of it then. Looking back, that's where I learned what a well-made thing actually feels like, and how much work goes into getting it from a factory floor to someone's dining table.

• Daria Kowalczyk — Operations and Fulfilment Coordinator: Daria joined Brookfield in mid-2022 after four years running stock and dispatch for a wholesale kitchenware distributor in Rocklea, Brisbane. She relocated to Toowoomba with her partner and responded to a job listing Jim posted on a local community board. She manages inbound freight, warehouse organisation, and carrier relationships, and she was the one who set up the current inventory tracking system in 2023 after the old spreadsheet method finally broke down.
• Reuben Tamboli — Customer Service and Online Orders: Reuben came to Brookfield in January 2023 through a referral from a mutual contact at the Toowoomba Regional Chamber of Commerce. He'd previously worked in customer support for a small outdoor goods retailer based in Maleny and knew the rhythm of e-commerce enquiries well. He handles all inbound customer messages, processes returns, and manages the product listings across the Shopify store, including writing most of the item descriptions.
• Anette Varga — Buying and Supplier Liaison: Anette grew up in Stanthorpe and spent several years working with a homewares importer in Fortitude Valley before Jim approached her in late 2023 to help formalise Brookfield's sourcing process. She speaks to suppliers directly, reviews samples before any new product goes live, and manages the reorder schedule to keep stock levels steady. Her contact with a flax linen supplier in the Riverina region has been particularly useful for the table linen side of the range.

How long will my order take to arrive?

Standard delivery takes 3–8 business days depending on your location. Express orders placed before 2pm AEST Monday–Friday typically arrive within 1–3 business days. Remote and regional areas may take a little longer.

Do you offer free shipping?

Yes. Orders over $120 qualify for free standard shipping anywhere in Australia. Orders under that threshold attract a flat rate based on your location and chosen delivery method, calculated at checkout.

What is your returns policy?

We accept returns within 30 days of delivery, provided items are unused and in original packaging. Change-of-mind returns are accepted, though return postage is at the customer's expense. Faulty or damaged goods are covered under Australian Consumer Law.

How do I care for the Sutherland Acacia Wood Serving Board?

Hand-wash only — do not put it in the dishwasher. Dry it immediately after washing and apply food-safe mineral oil every few months to keep the wood in good shape. Avoid soaking it in water or leaving it in direct sunlight for long periods.

Are any Brookfield products suitable for people with food allergies?

Our acacia wood products are made from acacia timber, which is a legume-family tree. People with severe legume allergies should check with their doctor before using acacia wood items for food contact. Our ceramics and other tableware are food-safe and free from lead and cadmium.

Can I order a custom size or personalised product?

• Why I left Sydney for a shed in Toowoomba — Twelve years in finance and I finally quit the week my bonus cleared, which tells you something about timing.
• The acacia supplier I found three hours from home — I drove to Stanthorpe on a Tuesday in October expecting nothing and came back with a supplier relationship and a boot full of samples.
